Canon Is Out With Their Second Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera, the EOS RP

February 14, 2019

By Greg Scoblete

Canon is expanding its portfolio of full frame mirrorless cameras with the compact EOS RP.

The $1,299 RP will be smaller than the EOS Rebel T7i and is aimed at enthusiasts looking to graduate from APS-C models to full frame. It will use the same R lens mount introduced with the EOS R.

The RP sports a 26-megapixel CMOS sensor with a native ISO range of 100-25,600 (expandable from ISO 50 to 102,400).

There are 4,779 manually selectable phase detect AF points covering 88 percent of the frame horizontally and 100 percent of the frame vertically. AF is sensitive to -5EV when using f/1.2 lenses. The RP incorporates Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF and eye detect autofocusing. Eye detection is available in AF-C when in burst mode, plus in movie servo AF and one-shot AF.

To aid users in their photographic journey, the RP has a Visual Guide mode that graphically represents the impact of exposure settings.

You’ll frame your scene through a 3-inch vari-angle touch display or a .39-inch, 2.36 million dot EVF. You can select and drag AF points using the LCD while composing through the EVF.

On the video front, the EOS RP can record 4K video (3840 x 2160) at 24p or full HD video up to 60p.

Additional features include:

  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • 4K time-lapse mode
  • Metering to -3EV
  • 5 fps continuous shooting with focus fixed on first frame or 4 fps in Servo AF

The EOS RP ships in March for $1,299. It’s available for pre-order now.
