I’ve heard that PJ’s are getting pressure from the online editors to have breaking news on their websites so quickly that they have to do them with iPhones. Pretty crappy situation.
As Matthew says, quite common. I work as a press photographer, and the thing is to be first with the news & pictures. So if something major happens, a phone picture will do untill you get your “expensive” pictures delivered
Used to do this until I bought an eye-fi card. Will still shoot with the iPhone to snag gps coordinates on big, breaking situations where the art dept. may want to build a map. Also, I’ve been known to snag video with the phone, the files are smaller than those created by my DSLRs and can be transmitted without have to downsize on my laptop. Yes the push to file for online is a pain, but not as bad as it was when we had to fire up the laptop and send before getting back to work without distraction.
