Dear Right Moves:

I assist a well-known photographer who pays me next to nothing.

I’ve been breaking my ass for months and I get no recognition other than he hasn’t fired me. I guess that means something. What I AM doing is putting together a portfolio of my own, re-interpreting some of the ideas he reviews with clients. I guess that’s worth something too. I should be loving this job but I am not. What do you think I should do? Is it time to leave?

Dear Anxious to Get Ahead,

It is not time to leave.

It may be time for you to sit down with your photographer and ask him for feedback as to how you’re doing NOT for more money.  The “value” of working for an established photographer is what you learn from him and the “ideas” he reviews with clients. When you’re working with an established name you are actually being paid to learn. I think if you heard from him that he appreciates your work it might go a long way to compensate for the money you’re not making.

If your photographer tells you he doesn’t like what you’re doing, that’s information you can use as well.

I repeat, it is not time to leave.
