Dear Right Moves,

What’s the most important difference between the photographer who has a long career and the one who flashes and fizzles?

Stephanie, Seattle, WA

Dear Stephanie,

The most important difference between the photographer who has a long career and the photographer who flashes and fizzes is PASSION. As a career, twenty-first century commercial photography is too hard to stay with, if you are not passionate about making images.

The certainty is that your career will be cruelly uneven. Just when you’re sure you’ve made it, the phone stops ringing and you’re just as sure you’ve tanked. If you don’t have a profound commitment to make photographs, your spirit will be broken.

The right move towards a successful career involves “talent” (the ability to present a personal vision in an aesthetically exciting way), timing, luck,  but mostly, a passion to make pictures.  If you think maybe you should be doing something else, my suggestion is: DO it.
