TOMORROW! Columbia College Chicago is hosting an informal portfolio review for their graduating photography students from 5-8pm tomorrow, May 16. Creative professionals are invited to go check out the work of this group of young photographers. The Philadelphia Photo Arts Center is holding their fourth annual Book Fair. Participants include MACK Books, Printed Matter, Vox Populi, Light Work and Houseboat Press, among many others. It’s a fair of photo books. Nuff said.

An exhibition of the work of 50 photographers selected as finalists in the 2013 Critical Mass competition opens this Friday at Jennifer Schwartz Gallery in Atlanta. The exhibition is curated by W.M. Hunt. http://www.jenniferschwartzgallery.com/critical-mass-top-50-exhibition/

This is very cool: United Photo Industries and New York Waterway’s East River Ferry people are partnering to exhibit photographs on weekday ferries throughout the summer. Tips for Applying for Fellowships and Competitions: Free Seminar

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund and the Aperture Foundation are sponsoring a panel discussion called, “Strategies for Photographers: Thoughts On How To Apply For Fellowships and Other Competitions,” to be held Monday, March 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Aperture Foundation in New York City. The event will be free and open to the public.

The panelists, all former head jurors for the W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography, will share their experiences judging grants and competitions, including the W. Eugene Smith Grant, World Press Photo, the Getty Images grants, PDN contests and others. The participants are David Friend of Vanity Fair, collector W.M. Hunt, Marcel Saba of Redux Pictures and Lauren Wendle of Photo District News.

The panel will follow the press conference announcing the call for entries to the 2013 W. Eugene Smith Grant. Entries for the competition are due by end of May.

W. Eugene Smith Grant Deadline Extended

The deadline to apply for the $30,000 W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography has been extended from May 31 to June 8. The grant supports a photographer whose past work and proposed project, as judged by a three-person jury, follows the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s concerned photography and dedicated compassion. In addition to the grant of $30,000, an additional $5,000 in fellowship money will be given to one or more finalists at the discretion of the jury.

Past recipients of the Smith grant include Krisanne Johnson, Darcy Padilla, Paolo Pellegrin, Lu Guang and Stanley Greene.

W. Eugene Smith Grant: Deadline June 3

The deadline for applications for the 2011 W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography is Friday, June 3. The $30,000 grant is given annually to recognize and support a photographer pursuing a humanistic photography project in the tradition of photojournalist W. Eugene Smith.  An additional $5,000 in fellowship money is dispersed, at the discretion of the jury, to one or more finalists deemed worthy of special recognition.

The W. Eugene Smith Fund chooses a three-member jury to evaluate the written proposals for the grant and submitted images.  Past recipients have included Darcy Padilla, Paolo Pellegrin, Ernesto Bazan, Lu Guang, Stanley Greene, Chien-Chi Chang, Graciela Iturbide, Brenda Ann Kenneally, and James Nachtwey.

The Smith Fund Web site has just been redesigned by MediaStorm (one of the grant sponsors) and incorporates the MediaStorm Player.  Expanded slide shows by past grant recipients back to 1980 can now be viewed on the site. You can also donate to the fund through the site, to continue its support of photojournalism.
